Founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, Huawei initially focused on manufacturing telephone exchanges and has expanded its business to include building telecommunications networks, providing operational and consulting services and equipment to companies in China and abroad, and manufacturing communications equipment for the consumer market.
Huawei surpassed Ericsson to become the world’s largest telecom equipment manufacturer in 2012 and surpassed Apple to become the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world in 2018, behind Samsung Electronics.
History of Huawei
In 1987, founded in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, Huawei became a sales agent for a Hong Kong company that manufactured subscriber exchanges (PBXs).
In 1992, started to develop and launch rural digital switching solutions.
In 1995, sales reached 1.5 billion RMB, mainly from the Chinese rural market, established Intellectual Property Department, Beijing R&D Center, and received CMM Level 4 certification in 2003.
In 2002, sales in overseas markets reached $552 million. Despite a 50% drop in global investment in telecom infrastructure between 2001 and 2002, Huawei’s international sales increased 68%, from $328 million in 2001 to $552 million in 2002. Huawei received UL’s TL9000 quality management system certification, deployed the world’s first mobile model for China Mobile.
In February 2009, Huawei debuted its first Android-powered smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Spain, making Huawei the first manufacturer to launch an Android smartphone in China.
At the end of December 2015, Huawei announced that its smartphone shipments exceeded 100 million units, 30 times more than in 2010, making it the first Chinese cell phone manufacturer to ship more than 100 million units of smartphones and the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world after Samsung and Apple. According to statistics, Huawei’s cell phone sales have grown significantly in the Chinese and European markets and are in a solid position in the mid- to high-end market.
In September 2017, Huawei created a “one network, one platform, multiple applications” construction model using IoT, cloud computing, big data, and other next-generation information and communication technologies to create a city-aware network based on narrowband IoT operations.
In January 2020, Huawei announced that it will cooperate with the Dutch company TomTom to provide mapping and navigation functions for future cell phones and tablets.
