East Timor

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, commonly known as East Timor, is a country located on the eastern tip of the island of Timor in Southeast Asia and was one of only two Portuguese colonies in the Far East (the other being Macau). The government of Timor-Leste has adopted the name “Timor-Leste” as its Portuguese name forthe country. Timor is also an Indonesian word meaning “East”. So the name Timor-Leste is a tautological name. During the period of Indonesian rule, Timor-Leste adopted “Timor Timur” as the name of the place and called Timor-Leste “Tim-tim” for short. “Lorosa’e” is the Tetum word for “East”, which means sunrise sun.
