The Kingdom of Bhutan, commonly known as Bhutan, or Brookpa in Qing dynasty history, is a landlocked South Asian country located on the southern slopes of the eastern Himalayas between China and India. Bhutan is bordered by the Indian state of Sikkim to the west, separated from Nepal, and the Indian states of West Bengal and Assam to the south. Bhutan’s capital and largest city is Thimphu. The Bhutanese originated from the ancient Tibetans, and the Menpa, who are of the same origin as the Tibetans, are now the closest ethnic group to the Bhutanese.
