Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Türkmenistan) is a landlocked country in southwestern Central Asia, bordered by the Caspian Sea to the west and Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran to the north and southeast, respectively, covering an area of 490,000 square kilometers and the second largest country in Central Asia after Kazakhstan, with about 80% of its territory covered by the Karakum Desert.
