Madeira, officially known as the Autonomous Region of Madeira, is an archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean southwest of Portugal’s national territory, one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal and the name of its main island. The archipelago is only 400 km from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to the south, about 1,000 km from Lisbon to the northeast, and about 600 km from the coastline of Morocco in Northwest Africa to the southeast. It consists of the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and two small uninhabited island groups. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, located on the south coast of the main island.
